How Bookmark Cleaner works

Bookmark Cleaner turns a Chrome bookmark export into a reviewable cleanup plan. Parsing, duplicate analysis, and cleanup decisions happen in your browser; the original browser library is never edited.

01 · EXPORT

Export bookmarks.html from Chrome

Open Chrome Bookmark Manager, choose its More menu, and select Export bookmarks. Chrome creates a Netscape-format HTML file containing your bookmark folders, titles, URLs, and saved dates. Selecting that file here does not upload it: the browser reads it directly into a temporary in-memory session.

02 · ANALYZE

Find exact, normalized, and possible duplicates

Exact duplicates share the same URL. Normalized duplicates differ only in details such as protocol, www, trailing slashes, fragments, or common tracking parameters. Possible duplicates use conservative domain-and-path similarity rules and are always labeled for extra review. Every group includes a reason so the result is explainable.

03 · REVIEW

Choose Keep, Remove, or Ignore

Nothing is selected automatically. Folder paths and bookmark titles remain visible while you decide. Ignoring a group makes no cleanup change, and possible matches are never treated as safe automatic removals.

04 · BACK UP & EXPORT

Download the original before creating the cleaned file

Export stays blocked until a byte-for-byte backup is generated. Bookmark Cleaner then builds a separate cleaned-bookmarks.html file and parses it again before download. Import that new file through Chrome Bookmark Manager; your existing browser bookmarks remain untouched until you choose what to do in Chrome.
